COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS

  • Typically raise restricted and unrestricted funds from donors
  • Donors can often set-up Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) that are managed by the Foundation
  • Program Officers provide DAF holders with guidance on where and why to give
  • Financial team has to spend considerable time to monitor and report performance of funds and grant portfolios
  • Investment committee is quite active, often prominent members of the community
  • Volunteers often serve on Review Committees for grants and donations for open calls
  • Open calls are shared widely to reach as many intended causes as possible
  • Geographic focus is a strong consideration, often with a hyper-local lens
  • Typically always trying to grow their endowments through resource development
  • Produce locally relevant policy work such as Vital Signs
  • Majority of community foundations have a small staff complement (zero to 5), while a minority could have 20+
